How can theater help us understand each other ?
The idea for this project came from a discussion that THEATRA had with the UN team in November 2023. We were looking for a way to use theatre with refugees settled in Slovakia. 2 years ago, Slovak schoolchildren in Košice wrote letters of support to Ukrainian refugees. These letters will serve as texts for the performance.
Slovaks and Ukrainians creating together
For this project, we brought together a group of 14 people (7 Slovaks and 7 Ukrainians), and we are creating a play about exile and refugees with them. We started rehearsing in December 2024. We rehearse with the team from 4 to 8h per month. We have already built a great team spirit. We have started creating more letters written by the participants. There is still a long way to go before the performances, that will start mid May 2025.
The project is organized by THEATRAbratislava and supported by the UN High Commission for Refugees and the French Embassy in Slovakia.
Attend to one of our open rehearsals
We rehearse in theaters, at the “Sme Spolu” NGO (an organization helping Ukrainian refugees to settle in Slovakia), at the French Institute, at the National Academy of Performing Arts (VŠMU) and other locations across Bratislava. We plan to play in Bratislava in May and June 2025. We also want to travel to Košice to perform in front of the children who wrote the letters. We are also making a documentary about the project. This film will be released in autumn 2025.
